Episode 400 Draw Along 4

Episode 400 of the CMP, a Creativity Matters Podcast — another draw along show

In this episode of the CMP, another field note-style draw along. I debated about calling this one 400. I thought I might pull together a “real” show that would be 400 and this would be 401. I thought that so much that I didn’t even number this one “in” the show other than a “400” that was more of a question than an answer. I said I would go back later and do it, but if I turn the mic on now, an entire new show will spill out and on top of the simplicity of the draw along. So, it’s only “sort of” numbered. But, really, does it matter?

Reaching 400 was the “stretch” goal added to the 50 Before 50 as a logical and meaningful replacement …. about 8 shows to do with 2 weeks left in the year….. other than that, it is just a number. It is nice to “hit” the number as part of this list before 50 because the show is, really, a very big part of me, of where I’ve been since 2006, of my creative journey, of the ways in which art saw me through parenting and has now helped shape and define the person I am today. It is a spark of serendipity, really, that the timing worked out for this to be part of the list. It isn’t the kind of goal I would have listed…. and yet it is oh, so right.

But calling it 400… it’s not my favorite. On the one hand, it does allow me to breeze on by. On the other, had there been more time…. had it happened in a different month, not one overshadowed by the 50 list, I would have done a more commemorative show….. because there is the real need to stop, catch breath, look back at memorable titles, moments, at the footprints in the sand or the lines etched along the sheer rockface of the last 16 years.

There will be a show that is “real” again, a writerly show, the kind I love. But this morning, after watching a bunch of videos on my phone before coffee and thinking about that “next” show, the more pressing thought was…. I have just enough time to finish inking last night’s drawing before my (small) Saturday morning Zoom drawing group.

A sliver of time.

A small window.

Fresh breeze blowing through.

I made a coffee…. and I drew.

And I enjoyed it.

And then I enjoyed my drawing group after, too.

And then I went on chucking through my day. I did buy the crumpets. And they did have the lemon curd, the same one in my cart at Amazon. But it was more expensive in person (25% more in the store), so while I waited 6 feet apart in line to check out, I ordered the lemon curd from Amazon, and it arrived the next day (the day after I recorded). I also picked up a selection of petit fours. I don’t plan to save them for the day. They were a list item…. one of the most whimsical of the bunch. So I stopped in the only place I knew to go to complete yet another task. I’m not fulfilling it quite the way I planned (not the right flavor, not the right anything, really), but I am fulfilling it.

Closing in on the full list and a goodbye to this year. Thank you for joining me and keeping me company along the way.

Correction: I mentioned that I fell asleep drawing the drawing that I completed in today’s show (or almost completed), and that’s true. I did jolt awake and realize I had made some significant stray marks. I drew for a few minutes more before accepting that I just couldn’t stay away for it. I stopped drawing at that point and shifted to working on a jigsaw puzzle that took up the next hour or longer…..

We are still in a pandemic

It can be easy to get weighed down by everything going on, by the anxiety and the uncertainty. But there are silver linings and gifts. I encourage you to look for them.

(The looking, in and of itself, offers a different mindset. You might find that the act of seeking and discovering helps shift your perspective in meaningful ways.)

A note about Trello: I’m feeling really productive with my reading and my “To Read” list this year using Trello. I use Trello for other things, including tracking my 50 Before 50 list, but I am finding new book lover’s peace this year with Trello boards set up to help me keep track of books I want to read, Kindle books I snag on a deal, books I hear about in groups or on other podcasts, and then the books I actually am reading or listening to. If you haven’t tried Trello, you should! (It’s free!)
