Episode 468 Loose Part 2

Episode 468 of the CMP, a Creativity Matters Podcast — A continuation of the discussion on loosening up, staying loose, and balancing the loose and the tight in your art, sketchbooks, and creative processes.

Note: This is part 2 of 2. To catch the first part, listen to Episode 467.

Can it all coexist on the page, the loose and the tight? That’s the discussion underway in this pair of episodes.

The previous show started with the feeling of being too tight on the page, too tight in how I am thinking about my pages (which is always something I caution). This conversation is about loose vs tight and noticing when we feel like we are tripping all over our own expectations or getting in our own way and hindering our creative flow.

In this episode, I talk about two specific sketchbooks I pulled out, how they related to the early days of my illustrated journaling (specifically with the start of the 50 Before 50 sketchbook series that has now ended up the #illustrateyourweek series), and how it feels like I’ve tightened up.

These two sketchbooks involve a 100-day project (started as that) doing simple (and loose) one-line contour drawings of people and a sketchbook in which I was recording my days using a graphic novel (or cartoon) style.

At the end of the show, I’ve got 10 simple suggestions for exercise you can do to try and loosen up if you feel you are tight on the page or if fear of the page is keeping you from using the page (which is a version of feeling tight).
