Episode 483 Atmospheric River and a Positive Look at DNFs

Episode 483 of the CMP, a Creativity Matters Podcast — Thoughts on the new year, on DNF’s, and on illustrated journaling

New year and another year …. and yet maybe you don’t feel like you quite got the chance for the fresh start you needed? Maybe you don’t feel like you lined things up, sorted things out, or made intentional and deliberate decisions about the year? Maybe you should just pick a new date (the start of a new month or any other day) as your “start,” and go from there.

In winding down 2022, I did an end-of-year creative sketchnote, and one of the things it showed me was a number of DNFs (“Did Not Finish”) from the year. That’s okay. I think we automatically peg a DFN as a problem, a sign that we don’t stick with things, or a flaw. But, really, there is no shame in a DNF. Some of the things I marked as DNF I made it “almost” to the end. I still objectively marked it as a DNF, and that’s okay. In one case, something that I did “most” of over a year, I put in the “finished” column. These statistics only matter to us individually. If you can separate yourself from feeling negative or disappointed about DNFs, you can look at them and what they tell you…. how they make you feel.

There’s some talk about that in this episode, some talk about moving into the new year, and just some overall creative life, illustrated journal, and daily art talk.

Enjoy!
